ALD Breast Screening Services

We currently have a one year nursing project (up to January 2024) funded by the Burdett Nursing Trust with the aim of improving the uptake of Breast Screening among women with a Learning Disability. Lauren has been appointed as the lead for the Adult Learning Disability Breast Screening Project within the Southern Trust.

The Adult Learning Disability Breast Screening Project aims to ensure women with a Learning Disability who are invited for screening have the opportunity to avail of screening via additional support and the provision of appropriate reasonable adjustments, where required.

I work in close partnership with SHSCT Breast Screening Team to identify women who have a Learning Disability. This will enable the Breast screening team to share easy read documents in advance of the appointment and to put reasonable adjustments in place during appointments to encourage attendance and increase the uptake of Breast Screening. On a referral basis I can provide additional support to women on an individual basis and facilitate a person centred approach to care within this service. A referral can be made via your GP or Case Manager. Educational sessions for women with a Learning Disability will be facilitated across a range of services including in Day Care centres and Care Facilities to provide information to help improve their understanding of the Breast Screening Service and assist them to make informed choices. Education and advice will also be offered to staff and carers to increase awareness of the service and the support available to ladies who have a Learning Disability.
