Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in Northern Ireland. It contributes to many cancers, heart disease, bronchitis and asthma and other illnesses, including stroke, which causes around 2,400 deaths per year in Northern Ireland, all of them avoidable and many more are affected through passive smoking.
We are committed to supporting those who want to stop smoking and progressing regional strategies for a smoke free environment. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. When you stop, you give your lungs a chance to repair and you’ll be able to breathe easier. There are many other health benefits too and they start almost immediately.
We offer stop smoking services for those who want to stop smoking across the Southern Trust area.
COVID-19 update
Your health is more important than ever. Smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 as the act of smoking means increasing the risk of transmission of the virus from hand to mouth.
Smoking causes damage to the lungs and can reduce lung capacity which can greatly increase the risk of serious illness. It can weaken the immune system. Evidence clearly shows COVID-19 virus attacks the respiratory system, which explains why smokers are at a greater risk
There has never been a more important time to stop. You can make a huge contribution to your health and to protect against coronavirus by stopping smoking.
