Neonatal Unit (NNU)

Our Neonatal Unit provides expert, round-the-clock care for New born babies who need a higher level of medical and nursing support after birth. It is located on the ground floor of Craigavon Area Hospital bedside the Maternity Unit .

Babies may stay on the unit for only a few hours or for a period of weeks, depending on their age and their care needs.

We have a total of 16 cots, which provide different levels of care depending on the needs of the baby. These levels are termed as below:

  • Level 1 : Intensive Care
  • Level 2 : High Dependency Care
  • Level 3 : Special Care

The unit is staffed by a highly skilled Medical and Nursing team who are supported by healthcare assistants, Allied Health Professionals ( Physio, speech and language and occupational therapist ) domestic services and administrative staff . The unit has access to radiology and laboratory services round the clock .   The Neonatal multidisciplinary team aim to promote Family integrated care by supporting , educating and empowering parents to provide as much care as possible to their baby during their stay in neonatal .

Our Neonatal Unit works closely with our sister unit in Daisy Hill and babies will move between units as required depending on the level of care required.

Our unit also operates as part of the Neonatal Network and babies may be transferred between units in Northern Ireland, to facilitate families being close to home or to free up capacity to admit infants requiring different levels of care.  The unit also has access to the regional Neonatal retrieval service who support the safe transfer  of babies between units .
