Support for Nurses and Midwives

26th November 2025

A new Learning Needs Analysis Guide and Tool will soon be available for nurses and midwives.
Developed by the Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council (NIPEC), it aims to help managers across health and social care Trusts, primary care and the independent sector make informed, evidence-based decisions about learning and development.

The guide and tool will help ensure that education and training is targeted, purposeful, aligned with strategic priorities, workforce planning and most importantly the delivery of safe, effective, person-centred care.

Gillian Henry, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Interim Head of Service for Nursing and Midwifery, Education and Workforce Development, who has been involved in the development said:

“We were delighted to have been one of the key partners in developing this guide and tool which ties in closely with our Southern Trust vision and strategy in supporting research, innovation and transformation.

These resources will provide a clear and practical way to identify learning needs, helping nurses, midwives, and their support staff plan their development, strengthen their skills, and progress their careers.”

The Learning Needs Analysis Guide and Tool will be presented at an upcoming Chief Nursing Officer meeting for formal approval and will then be shared with colleagues.
