World Quality Day 2020 is an annual celebration of the world’s commitment to quality improvement and is a great opportunity to shine the spotlight on our staff, teams and projects within the Trust that are deeply invested in creating and improving patient care.
As an organisation we take pride in the quality of services we deliver. Quality is the foundation of the Southern Trust and our organisation is committed to improving services and the experience of patients and clients every day of the year. We encourage you/your team to get involved in this year’s event by sharing your teams commitment to quality improvement via Twitter using the hash-tag #WQD2020.
To celebrate World Quality Day, the Quality Improvement Team is launching a Quality Improvement Journal Club to mark World Quality Day. The newly established Journal Club will enable all staff to keep abreast of quality improvement literature and methodologies. It will be used to facilitate an evidence based approach to problem solving and to enable an exchange of insights regarding quality improvement problems. It will also provide an opportunity for social interaction.

This year has been challenging for all our staff and teams however the Quality Improvement Team has continued to support staff, service users and carers through this difficult time. Due to COVID-19, this year’s Annual Quality Improvement Event has been postponed, however we would like to acknowledge some of the initiatives we have/are supporting:
Launch of Specialist Trainees Engaged in Leadership Programme (STEP) October 2020.
The Specialist Trainees Engaged in leadership Programme (STEP) is a Leadership skills and quality Improvement programme for all medical trainees. The Quality Improvement Team, in partnership with the Medical Directorate is currently supporting 15 medical trainees on the Core Steps programme and 27 medical trainees on First Step programme.
Scottish Coaching and Leading for Improvement (SCLIP) – Programme
The Scottish Coaching and Leading for Improvement programme is a 3-month Quality Improvement learning programme which aims to develop core managers who will coach and facilitate teams to deliver improvement and to support achievement of improvement strategies within their organisation. The Quality Improvement Team is currently supporting 15 senior managers who will be commencing the programme in January 2021.

We have supported a number of teams across the Trust to apply and prepare for awards in a variety of fields.
The BMJ Patient Safety Awards 2020
The DC Conversion service was shortlisted as a finalist for the BMJ Patient Safety Awards under the Diagnostic Team Category for their Implantable Loop Recorders Project to improve timeliness of treatments.
HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2020
Our Dysphagia Support Team were also shortlisted finalists at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards under the Patient Safety Education and Training Award for their Dysphagia Awareness and Management Training.
We have submitted a number of other award applications and are awaiting the outcome.
The calibre of projects being submitted for award ceremonies is extremely high. To reach the final stage is a fantastic achievement and is a testament to the ongoing commitment of teams across the Trust to improve services. The awards provide an opportunity to share local innovation on a national platform.
The Quality Improvement team continue to provide Quality Improvement Clinics virtually to anyone wishing to discuss a quality improvement initiative or seek advice relating to an ongoing project.
