An ICU nurse, who qualified herself just three years ago, has been nominated for a prestigious award in recognition of her exceptional support for a student nurse.
Eimhear Black is one of 12 nurses from across the UK shortlisted for the Student Nursing Times award in the ‘Practice Supervisor of the Year’ category. This award recognises a practice supervisor who consistently goes above and beyond to support nursing and midwifery students in the learning environment. She is the only nurse nominated from the Southern Trust and the only individual nominee from Northern Ireland health trusts among the 25-award category.
Nominated by a former student, Eimhear was praised for her dedication to shaping the next generation of nurses.
“Her commitment to mentorship, alongside her exceptional patient care, makes her truly deserving of this recognition,” the student said.
The nomination said: “With just three years of experience, Eimhear exemplifies outstanding leadership and mentorship in the demanding ICU environment. As a student nurse, I was inspired by her ability to explain complex concepts with clarity, empower me through hands-on learning, and create a supportive, inclusive atmosphere. Her compassion for patients and families, professionalism, and resilience set an exceptional example.”
Although initially apprehensive about her supervisory role, Eimhear found reassurance in the guidance of colleagues in the ICU at Craigavon, many of whom who had been Practice Supervisors themselves.
“I was nervous at first because I’m naturally quiet, and it can be challenging to understand how best to support a new student, especially when you don’t know their learning style,” Eimhear said.
“However, I received fantastic support from my colleagues, and I could relate to my student because I had been in her position just a few years ago.”
She added that she was shocked to be nominated.
“My student spent six or seven weeks with me, and I didn’t fully appreciate the lasting impact I could have on someone during such a short time.”
“We are incredibly proud of Eimhear’s nomination. She is highly regarded by colleagues, and this recognition showcases her dedication, skill, and leadership – especially given how early she has been recognised in her career.”
Dawn Ferguson, Interim Director for Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health Professionals, and Functional Support Services, added:
“This nomination is a testament to the dedication of our staff to ensure that our students receive the highest quality education and training while studying in the Southern Trust.
“A great practice supervisor/assessor does more than just support a student nurse or midwife – they inspire and motivate through excellent teaching and role modelling. Well done Eimhear on being recognised in this way. The contribution that Eimhear and all of our other practice supervisors/assessors make in creating an excellent practice placement environment is so important in ensuring we have a substantive nursing and midwifery workforce in the future.”
The Student Nursing Times Awards will take place on Friday, 2 May 2025.

Eimear’s ICU colleagues are extremely proud of her and her nomination for the Student Nursing Times ‘Practice Supervisor of the Year award.
