A new outdoor activity space is enhancing the short-break experience for service users at Woodlawn House.
Woodlawn House is the Southern Health and Social Care Trust’s statutory short break facility for adults with a learning disability.
The newly developed area has transformed an underused outdoor space into an inclusive and accessible environment designed to support recreation, exercise, relaxation and social interaction.
The project was developed in response to feedback from service users, carers and stakeholders, who highlighted the importance of enhancing outdoor facilities and creating more opportunities for meaningful activity during short breaks.
The new space includes a range of accessible equipment and features tailored to different needs and abilities, promoting physical wellbeing, sensory engagement and participation in everyday activities.
The project was funded through the Department of Health’s Dragons’ Den scheme and is one of several improvements identified through ongoing engagement with service users, carers and staff.
Marsha Begley, Social Work & Social Care Lead Disability Division, said:
“We are delighted to see this project completed and officially opened. From the outset, this project was about listening to our service users and carers and creating a space that would enhance the short-break experience for everyone who stays at Woodlawn House.
“The new facilities provide opportunities for physical activity, sensory stimulation and social interaction in a safe and welcoming environment. It has been wonderful to see how much the space is already being enjoyed and the positive difference it is making to the short-break experience for service users.”
Jan McGall, Director of Mental Health and Disability Services, said:
“This project is a great example of how small improvements can make a real difference to the experience and wellbeing of the people who use our services.
“Supporting people to live well and participate in their communities is a key part of the Southern Trust’s Vision and Strategy 2030. This new space will promote health and wellbeing, encourage participation in meaningful activities and enhance the experience of people attending Woodlawn House. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this project a reality.”
