Work has begun on a new CT suite at Craigavon Area Hospital.
£6.8 million ‘twin’ suite will offer two CT scanners, one dedicated for inpatient use and a separate scanner for outpatient appointments.
Contractor Felix O’Hare started work on site this week for the new build, which will be located in the maternity car park and connected to the main hospital.
CT (Computed Tomography) imaging creates detailed images of the organs and is vital for the diagnosis and monitoring of many conditions.
Welcoming the new development, Director of Acute Services for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Melanie McClements said:
“As demand for our hospital services is continually increasing, the need for diagnostic services, particularly CT scanning, is also growing.
“Access to a twin scanner suite will be a welcome boost to our radiography team, offering them a high quality clinical environment which meets current standards. Being able to maintain both inpatient need and outpatient appointments together, will greatly assist the flow of patient care, and the close proximity to the Emergency Department will speed up our response to diagnosing patients with severe trauma. The back-up of an additional scanner will also offer continuity of service, in the event of essential maintenance or breakdown.”
Melanie adds: “Some of the pedestrian walk ways will be out of use during construction and we urge for caution around the area. Staff and contractors will make every effort to minimise disruption until the development is completed and we thank you for your understanding while we work on this exciting new development.”
The Maternity Car Park is no longer in use and the spaces have been relocated to Car Park 11 (behind the Maples/Rowans).
It is planned that the new CT suite will be operational in autumn 2022.
