The Southern Trust’s Trauma and Orthopaedic Team has received a second national award for patient safety.
The team has been named as a ‘National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider’ for meeting high quality patient safety standards in joint replacement operations.
The NJR monitors the performance of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacements – to help improve clinical outcomes for the benefit of patients, clinicians and the healthcare industry.
The Southern Trust Trauma and Orthopaedic service was established in 2008 to treat a range of bone and joint conditions. The purpose built Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit at Craigavon opened in 2010, including dedicated theatres, recovery areas and ward space. The team also offers outpatients services from Daisy Hill Hospital.
The team is ranked amongst the best in the UK for treating hip fractures and has been recognised for research and innovation for example; through a rapid recovery scheme; day case knee and hip procedures; for acute trauma; and through training and upskilling staff.
The NJR award is based on evidence of commitment to patient safety, quality of care and overall cost effectiveness of joint surgery.

“We’re so proud that the Trauma and Orthopaedic Team have received this award for the second year running. This is a testament to the standards set by the service and a true reflection of the high quality care received by people across the Southern area when they attend for a joint procedure.
“Despite the very difficult circumstances over the past 18 months, with regrettable delays in procedures for many people due to the pandemic, our team continue to do their very best for patients and this award is a result of their amazing skill, professionalism and compassion.”
