Care Experienced young person celebrates Social Work graduation

15th July 2026

A care experienced young person from the Southern Trust has celebrated a remarkable achievement after graduating from Ulster University Magee with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Social Work.

Desiree Groogan marked the special occasion alongside her former 14 Plus social worker, Brígín McWilliams, and her former Health and Social Care teacher from St Patrick’s College, Dungannon, Maria Campbell, who joined her in celebrating the achievement.

Desiree’s decision to pursue a career in social work was inspired by her own experiences growing up in care. After entering foster care in Primary 7, she experienced several foster placements and the challenges that can come with change and uncertainty at a young age.

Speaking about her achievement, Desiree said:

“I chose to pursue a career in social work as a result of my own early life experiences, which have shaped both my perspective and my passion for supporting others. I went into foster care when I was in P7 and experienced multiple foster placements, facing significant change and uncertainty at a young age. This gave me a strong understanding of how adversity impacts children and young people and reinforced the importance of ensuring they feel safe, supported and heard.

“My journey has not been straightforward. I have overcome personal challenges, including balancing caring for my son alongside completing school and university.

“Despite this, I remained focused and determined to achieve my goals. I am passionate about advocating for children and young people who may feel unheard, and I strive to be a positive role model by showing that anybody can do anything, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

Brígín McWilliams, a social worker with the Southern Trust’s 14 Plus Service, which supports young people in and leaving care as they prepare for adulthood and independence, said:

“It has been a privilege to see Desiree achieve this important milestone. Throughout the years she has shown tremendous determination, resilience and commitment to achieving her goals. Her graduation is a wonderful achievement and I have no doubt that her experiences, insight and compassion will make her an excellent social worker. Everyone who has supported Desiree along her journey is incredibly proud of all that she has accomplished.”
