Declaration against abuse

14th June 2021

To mark World Elder Abuse Day (Tuesday 15th June), the Southern Local Adult Safeguarding Partnership is declaring zero tolerance of abuse and neglect of older people in our local community.

The Partnership is a group of statutory, independent, community and voluntary sector organisations who work together to raise awareness of and support all adults who have experienced abuse, exploitation or neglect.

For the second year now, due to social distancing, rather than coming together, partner organisations each have remotely made a commitment, by signing the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse Declaration.

Adult abuse can take various forms – it could be neglect, physical, sexual, emotional or financial. It can happen anywhere the person lives or visits and very often the abuser will be well known to their victim.

Signing the declaration on behalf of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Chair, Eileen Mullan said:

“The past 18 months have been very difficult for many of us, particularly for older people, those with mental or physical health issues, or a disability.  Social distancing may have led to greater isolation, loneliness or dependency on others, which sadly we know can sometimes expose those more vulnerable, to exploitation or crime.

“As restrictions are now lifting and we are meeting those who we may not have seen in some time, it is really important for us all to listen and be observant. If you are worried about signs of potential abuse or neglect, we would encourage you to please get in touch.”
