23rd September 2026

This week is Organ Donation Week (21-27 September). The Public Health Agency and the Southern Trust are encouraging people to have a chat with their family on giving the gift of life.
Almost a decade ago in January 2007, Fintan McCabe tragically died aged 17 years old after a choking accident at his home.
Fintan, a former pupil at Lismore Comprehensive, was a gym and kickboxing enthusiast and is remembered by his family as “fun-loving, full of life, and a young man whose presence brough warmth, laughter, and kindness into every room”.
Fintan’s kindness didn’t end with his life – through organ donation, he gave the extraordinary gift of life to others. His eyes gave two people the gift of sight; his heart for valves, commonly used to replace or repair damaged valves for infants, helped a three-year old child; and his lungs, liver, both kidneys and pancreas, changed the lives of others.
One person can save up to nine lives as an organ donor. Fintan’s selfless final act of kindness transformed the lives of eight people, and his legacy lives on in their lives.
More people than ever are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, as demand continues to exceed the number of donated organs available. Each year in Northern Ireland around 10-15 people die while awaiting a transplant. As of 31 August 2026, there were 156 people waiting for a transplant.
Whatever you decide, it is important talk with your loved ones to give them the certainty they need to support your decision. Only half of families agree to donation if they don’t know their loved one’s decision, but this rises to nine out of 10 if they know their loved one wanted to donate.
It is quick and easy to register your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Register today at www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.
