3rd February 2026

Proud parents Joanna and Alan Annett from Kilkeel with little Josh who was the 2,000th baby to be born at Daisy Hill Hospital’s midwifery led unit.

Daisy Hill Hospital’s midwifery led team are celebrating their 2,000 birth with the arrival of baby Josh Annett.

Proud parents Joanna and Alan from Kilkeel were delighted with their midwifery led experience supported by midwives Liz Campbell and Shivaun McKinley. Their healthy baby boy arrived in the early hours of 21st January weighing 4220g.

The midwifery unit first opened in 2014 beside the hospital’s main maternity ward. It has two ensuite rooms, each equipped with a birthing pool, sofa bed and birthing aids.

The unit is staffed 24/7 with a team of midwives, dedicated to providing a high standard of care in a relaxed, home from home environment where mums-to-be, can opt for soft lighting and their choice of music.

Congratulating the team on reaching this milestone, Michelle Harrison, Assistant Director of Integrated Maternity and Women’s Health services for the Southern Trust explained: “In the Southern Trust we are committed to providing high quality maternity care, before, during and after birth, as close to home as safely possible. This means offering a range of options depending on each woman’s specific clinical needs. At both Daisy Hill and Craigavon Area Hospital, we offer consultant obstetrician led care, for women who may need more medical support and also midwifery led units for those considered lower risk. Our community-based home birth team can also support lower risk women to birth their baby in their own surroundings.

“The fact that so many mums choose to birth in Daisy Hill’s midwifery unit is a true testament to the compassion and dedication of our wonderful team here. Our midwives support women on a one-to-one basis, promoting the philosophy of natural childbirth and helping them to give birth safely without medical intervention where possible.”

“Whatever your needs, our amazing midwifery and obstetric teams will support and advise you to ensure the safest care and most suitable place for you and your baby.”

Expectant mothers will be able to find out more about the Midwifery Led Unit at their first antenatal booking visit and can discuss with their midwife whether they may be suitable to give birth there.
