Pilot clinic offers dedicated support for local carers

9th June 2026

As part of Carers Week, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust is highlighting a pilot Carer’s Clinic, which is currently running within the Lurgan Integrated Care Team.

The monthly clinic has been developed to give Carers a dedicated space to meet with a Social Worker and access support in a safe, supportive environment. During the session, Carers can complete a Carer’s Assessment and speak openly about their experiences and any challenges they may be facing.

Carers are also provided with clear information about available services and how to access support within the community.

Although still in its early stages, feedback from those who have attended has been very positive. Many have welcomed the chance to take time away from their caring responsibilities, speak honestly, feel listened to, and better understand what support is available to them.

Carers shared: “I found out about support I did not know existed and now know who to contact if I need help,” and “I feel much more informed about the support available after attending the Carer’s Clinic.”

Roisin Magennis, Social Work Professional Lead with Lurgan Integrated Care Team, said:
“We wanted to create a space where Carers could come in, take time for themselves and talk openly about their experiences.

“It has been really encouraging to see how valued that time has been. Carers have told us they appreciate having someone to listen and help guide them through what support is available. That feedback is helping us to shape how the clinic develops.”

“The pilot aims to provide early, preventative support by helping carers feel informed, connected and confident in knowing where to turn if their needs change.”

To date, a small number of sessions have taken place, with early learning helping to shape how the clinic may develop in the future.”

Brian Beattie, Director of Adult Community Services, said:
“We know that caring can be rewarding, however it can also be challenging. This pilot Carer’s Clinic is about creating time and space for Carers to focus on their own needs, alongside the important role they play in supporting others.

“Supporting carers is an important part of our focus on helping people to live well at home and within their communities, in line with our Trust’s Vision and Strategy 2030. The early feedback has been positive and is helping us to better understand what makes a difference for Carers and how we can continue to strengthen support.”
