A dedicated unit run by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, which supports patients following major surgery, is marking its second anniversary.
Based at Craigavon Area Hospital, the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provides enhanced care for patients who require close monitoring after surgery but do not need admission to intensive care. Since opening in August 2023, with capacity for up to three patients, the unit has supported over 800 people in their post-operative recovery.
PACU plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth delivery of surgical services, helping to reduce cancellations and easing pressure on critical care teams. Located within the hospital’s Recovery Ward, it is staffed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team including recovery staff, allied health professionals (AHPs), pharmacists, ward clerks, medical teams, resident doctors, domestics, and student nurses, all working together to provide the highest standards of care.
Ann Sherry, PACU Ward Sister, said:
“This is a fantastic service for patients who need that bit of extra care after surgery. We have an incredibly dedicated team who work hard every day to support people during their recovery”.
Helena Murray, PACU Lead Nurse, noted:
“PACU staff have recently completed an in-depth course in patient-centred post-operative care, including airway and cardiac support, pain relief, nutrition and frailty. This course provides staff with vital skills and knowledge to support PACU patients”.
Declan McClements, Assistant Director of Surgery, Anaesthetics, Theatres and Intensive Care, added:
“PACU is a real asset to the Southern Trust and a great example of how multidisciplinary working can bring real benefits to patients through better experiences and outcomes. It is a vital part of our surgical pathway and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest standards of care every day. We’re proud to mark this important milestone.”
PACU was established with funding from the Department of Health as part of the Review of General Surgery and Elective Care Framework – Restart, Recovery and Redesign (2021).
