Theatre expansion boosts planned orthopaedic surgery

10th December 2025

South Tyrone Hospital has expanded its theatre capacity, enabling more planned day-case surgery and helping reduce waiting lists across the Southern Trust.

The hospital now supports increased surgical activity across multiple specialties, treating up to 160 patients most weeks in its dedicated day-case theatres. Among the procedures benefiting from this additional capacity are planned Orthopaedic surgeries, including treatment for common injuries, injuries including ACL tears, meniscal injuries and patella-femoral conditions.

Patients are first assessed in specialist clinics within the Trust. Following consultant review and, where needed, imaging, suitable patients can now receive surgery more quickly in South Tyrone Hospital’s dedicated day-case theatres.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Scott Matthews is one of the Orthopaedic Surgeons who is now working on the Dungannon site. He said:
“By reintroducing this acute knee service and increasing theatre capacity in South Tyrone, we can diagnose injuries earlier and offer timely surgery. Early imaging and early treatment help improve long-term outcomes for patients and support a reduction in waiting times.”

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Alistair Mayne said:
“Feedback from patients has been very positive, and this additional activity at South Tyrone also helps free up capacity in Craigavon Area Hospital, protecting both trauma and joint replacement services.”

Veronica Roberts, Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics, added:
“This investment in facilities and specialist pathways is already making a real difference for patients. Using the strengths of South Tyrone as a dedicated day-case centre allows us to treat more people sooner and continue to reduce the pressures on our waiting lists.

“South Tyrone Hospital continues to play a growing role in delivering planned Orthopaedic surgery, supporting more timely care for patients across the Southern Trust.

“Alongside the existing foot and ankle service, the reintroduction and expansion of knee surgery means patients can now access an even wider range of orthopaedic procedures in a dedicated day-case unit.”
