Nine staff have been recognised for making a difference to the experience of nursing students on placement within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.
The Trust held a recognition event to celebrate those who received nominations for the Queen’s University Belfast School of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Supervisor / Practice Assessor Awards.
A total of nine staff were nominated for the support they provide to nursing and midwifery students, with James Ogle, Staff Nurse in the Cath Lab at Craigavon Area Hospital, receiving the overall Practice Supervisor / Practice Assessor award.
Student nurses nominated their peers as someone who has made a difference to them whilst on their placement and provided examples of how each staff member went over and above the usual level of support.
A Practice Supervisors’ role is to support and supervise nursing and midwifery students learning in the practice learning environment while Practice Assessors assess and confirm the student’s achievement of practice learning for a placement or a series of placements.
Gillian Henry, Interim Head of Nursing, Midwifery Education and Workforce said:
“It is wonderful to see so many of our colleagues being recognised and I am proud that they are helping to have such a positive impact on our future workforce.
“Our staff consistently go the extra mile to ensure our students receive the best education and training while studying in the Southern Trust and our students continue to impress us with their dedication and hard work. This is a fantastic achievement and I commend the drive and determination that has gone into making our students’ experience the best it can be.
“A good supervisor helps to shape a student nurse or midwife and help inspire and motivate them throughout their course as well as their chosen career. Without our student nurses, we wouldn’t be able to ensure the future of nursing so an excellent practice placement environment and experience is so important.”
