Glenanne Unit

The Glenanne Unit is the Breast Care and Screening Unit for the Southern Trust. It is located at Craigavon Area Hospital site. They provide appointments for Breast screening and Breast assessment following red flag referrals. With the new regional breast red flag waiting list initiative, even if you don’t live in the Southern Trust area your breast assessment appointment may be here.

  • What to expect at your appointment

When you attend for a breast assessment, please allow up to 3 – 4 hours for the appointment. You can take one friend, family member or carer with you to your appointment. You will be given a gown to wear and can change in our private facilities. You will then have a consultation with a breast clinician who will take a history and examine you. This may be all that is required and you may be discharged at this point. If you do require investigations, these will be done following the consultation in the same visit. These investigations may include a mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy. After your investigations you may be discharged if they are normal.

  • Results

If you have a biopsy, you will be given an indication of what the abnormality is likely to be, but you will need to wait for the results as it is not possible to give a definitive diagnosis on the day. Results may take approximately 2-3 weeks. You may need to attend a different breast unit for this, depending on where your GP initially referred you. We understand this can be an anxious time, but it is important that accurate results are given to you with a clear plan for treatment should this be necessary.
